Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the assessment of after-school obesity control program for the life habits and physical activity in obese elementary school children. The subjects were 20 obese children of obesity index over 120% from the third to fourth grades of elementary school. After-school obesity control program included nutrition education, new sports exercise (60% HRmax) and behavioral therapy was performed 3 times for 8 weeks. Measuring materials were body composition, blood lipid profiles, life habits (dietary habit, life attitude, food intake) and physical activity (daily steps, activity coefficient, daily energy expenditure). From the results, positive changes were made in height, body mass index (BMI), %body fat, waist hip ratio (WHR), serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels of blood lipid profiles following after-school obesity control program. The score for dietary habit and food intake changed in a positive direction but life attitude had not changed. Daily steps, activity coefficient and daily energy expenditure were positive changes. These results suggest that afterschool obesity control program including nutrition education, new sports exercise and behavioral therapy may be effective for helping obese children. Parents, school nurses and the other support groups should be encouraged to participate from the planning stage of the program to be effective in weight control of obese elementary school children.
